Boreal Toad Refuge
The Living Planet Aquarium holds and displays a refuge population of Boreal Toads for the Utah Division of Water Resources. Boreal Toads are in bad shape in Utah; these toads represent 2 populations that are nearly extinct. We will eventually do some captive breeding and can use these animals for reintroductions if DWR´s worst-case scenario takes place and the remaining wild toads die off.
Rescued Green Sea Turtle
We have a non-releasable Green Sea Turtle that tells the story of all the sick and injured animals from the Gulf of Mexico. All 7 species of sea turtles are threatened or endangered. Hundreds of turtles are hit by boats every year and hundreds more are impacted by oil spills and other pollution. http://thelivingplanet.com/things_to_see_and_do/ocean_explorer/sea_turtle.html
Endangered Species
We display multiple Utah native species that are threatened or endangered including Razorback Sucker, Bonytail, Woundfin, Least Chub, June Sucker, and Columbia Spotted Frogs. An important part of any recovery effort is public education. Awareness is a critical factor in enabling people to better understand and protect our Earth´s ecosystems.Ocean-friendly Seafood Recommendations
