Focus on different career opportunities in zoos and aquariums and meet some professionals at LLPA! Students will learn what it takes to run an aquarium and the steps required to advance in aquarium career fields. An optional hands-on lab component consists of performing water quality tests for actual aquarium exhibits. Tests include pH, nitrate, nitrite, and ammonia levels.
Threatened and Endangered Species
Discuss how human influences are impacting threatened and endangered species. Using critical thinking, students are asked to infer likely causes of population decline in various species.
Ocean Properties Lab
Discover the amazing ways humans depend on the ocean! Through a set of experiments, students will learn different properties of water such as heat absorption, density of fresh water vs. salt water, and pH variations. Discussion takes places on the ocean’s physical and chemical properties and their importance to human life.
Bird Adaptations Lab
Explore traits of different birds and determine how they are specific to the environment they live in. Students participate in two activities, one that demonstrates the relationship between beak shape and food choice and one that shows the mechanisms of inheritance and selection. (May include a live bird encounter depending on availability)
