Discover North American River Otters
North American River Otters are found throughout freshwater river systems in Canada and the United States. They are a member of the weasel family Mustelidae. Weasels like otters are famous for their elongated bodies, high metabolisms, ferocious nature, and strong musk. Musk is a chemical used by many mammals and reptiles to mark territory and as a defense against predators. Otters are specially adapted for life in and around water with dense fur, long tails, short ears, and webbed feet. They have a third eyelid called a nictitating membrane that acts like goggles to protect their eyes as they swim. Even though it is better than human underwater vision, otters cannot see well underwater, especially if the water is murky. They compensate by using their sense of touch through their paws and whiskers to help them find food and avoid obstacles. They are one of the most maneuverable mammals in North American rivers.
