Shark Week

Wednesday, July 26, 2017 written by Macy Gibbons and photographed by Mika Miller

It’s Shark Week here at Loveland Living Planet Aquarium! Come join us for fun-filled shark activities all day long until Saturday, July 29.

See how sharks find their food in the ocean, even when they can’t see it, with our Shark Electroreception activity in the Aquarium lobby  from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

At 1:30 p.m., join us at the shark exhibit in the Ocean Explorer Gallery for the Shark Feed or Shark Talk presentation.

What’s more dangerous than a shark? A lot of things actually. Join us in the Aquarium lobby from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. to see if you can figure out what is really more dangerous than a shark.

Sharks have been around for millions of years and over time they have had several adaptations to help them survive. Join us in the Aquarium lobby from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. to see some of the amazing things sharks have and do.

If you are here on Saturday or Sunday, you can also join us at 11:00 a.m. in at the shark exhibit for the Shark Dive Talk, where one of our divers talks underwater!

Along with all of these exciting activities, visitors will get to make their very own shark tooth necklaces! We will have a table set up in the Aquarium lobby with all of the supplies and staff to help. If you would like to make your own shark tooth necklaces at home you can follow along with the video and instructions here!

It’s Shark Week at the Aquarium! We are celebrating all week long with fun shark activities, like making this Shark tooth necklace.  Make sure to visit the Aquarium to make one for yourself and check out our schedule here.

Shark Tooth Necklace

  1. Grab a 2½ ft piece of yarn
  2. Pick out 5 shark teeth
    1. For best results use one large tooth and four small ones!
  3. Pick out 18 beads
  4. Fold your yarn in half
  5. Pick your center tooth and thread the folded part of the yarn through the hole
  6. Pull the ends through the loop and pull tight
    1. Not too tight though! You don’t want to rip your tooth
  7. Place 3 pony beads on the yarn
    1. Do this on each side of the tooth
  8. Thread another tooth onto the necklace after the beads and tie it into place
  9. Thread on 3 more beads
  10. Repeat steps 7-9 once more on this side
  11. Now repeat steps 7-9 twice more on the other side so there are 5 teeth and 18 beads total
  12. Tie the necklace together at the top!

  8. Pull the other end of the yarn tight to form an upside-down “V”
