How to be Environmentally Conscientious Around the Holidays

How can you celebrate the season and still be kind to the planet? Think sustainable. Think G.R.E.E.N.
Show how much you care about the recipient by creating homemade goods or cards by recycling paper from around the house. Donate in others’ names to organizations that support conservation and the environment. Consider giving the gift of experiences and creating memories that are priceless.
Use colorful cloth drawstring bags. Save gift wrap, bags, boxes, and bows to use from year to year. If it can’t be saved, recycle it (if allowed by your local recycling service).
Consider how ecosystems around you will be affected by your celebrations. You can send digital invitations and use biodegradable tableware. Research your gifts ahead of time to make sure your purchases are not harmful to animal habitats, and recycle as much as you can.
Limit electricity consumption by purchasing LED lights and using outlet timers or Home Control devices to turn off the lights. Lower your thermostat at night and when you aren’t home.
Send eCards instead of paper ones. Focus more on relationship-building and low-waste experiences. Donate food or volunteer for charities as a family.
Even start family traditions, such as visiting the Festival of the Seas celebration at Loveland Living Planet Aquarium.
By doing one of these things (or more), you will make a difference, you will be an example to your friends and family, AND it will be a gift of love to your planet during this holiday season.
